Christina Lourenço’s interest in photography began in childhood. She enjoyed experimenting with an old camera belonging to her mother. As a teenager, she gained first experiences with a compact camera and my father's analog SLR camera. In high school, she joined the photography club, where we learned about the basics of photography and developing photos in the darkroom. She attended her first courses at the adult education center (VHS).
Although she was advised against pursuing formal training as a photographer after high school, she successfully studied to become a primary and lower secondary school teacher and worked in this field for 18 years.
However, photography remained a constant companion. She taught herself more and more about photography and attended further workshops with various photographers. She completed her first assignments alongside her main job.
In 2021, Christina took a sabbatical, during which she registered a small business to further develop her photography work.
In 2022, she resigned from teaching and transitioned to working as a full-time photographer in 2023. Since then, she has been working independently as a photographer, photojournalist, and photographic artist.
Photographer, primarily in the fields of event photography (celebrations of all kinds), portrait, and commercial photography. In addition, Christina works in artistic photography, using various shooting techniques (often "Intentional Camera Movement"). She also likes to work with different manual lenses to achieve a variety of effects.
Artist Statement
<<My first encounters with photography took place in nature. I have maintained this love for nature photography, even though I have since discovered other areas as well. Cities, landscapes, and people also fascinate me. In general, I approach photography very intuitively, letting myself be guided by the available light and the emotions that arise in me at that moment. I use as few tools as possible, preferring to accept the situation as it is. Less is more!
It is also important to me that a photograph is created in the camera, not through image editing or artificial intelligence. That’s why I began experimenting with different in-camera techniques years ago—such as multiple exposures, long exposures, and so on. I often use a variety of manual, sometimes vintage lenses that create specific effects. I still use them today because they often lend an image a unique or charming atmosphere.
I enjoy giving my photographs something lively and dynamic. The fleeting moment, the fleeting movement, should become tangible for the viewer—yet still leave space for their own thoughts and emotions. I especially enjoy working with the ICM technique (Intentional Camera Movement), where I consciously move the camera or zoom during a longer exposure. I see my camera more as a paintbrush with which I create painterly images in combination with photographic techniques.
The material on which I print a photograph ultimately depends on the motif. If the image is meant to resemble a painting, I like to present it on canvas. If I want the colors, contrasts, or subject to dominate, I often choose acrylic glass. I particularly enjoy printing images on brushed aluminum when I want to give them an elegant touch or if the subject has a more urban or industrial character. The image also changes depending on the viewer's perspective.
In today’s fast-paced world with its endless technological possibilities, I want to bring the craft of photography back into focus and free it from its static nature. I want to offer the viewer a moment to pause and become immersed in the captured fleeting moment—allowing it to feel precious and alive.>> (Christina Lourenço)
