Vidya Patel is a visual artist and multidisciplinary designer whose practice bridges still life painting, drawing, and contemporary visual communication. Based in India, her work is informed by formal education in business, marketing, and graphic design completed across India and Canada, alongside more than a decade of experience in the creative industries.
Before developing her fine art practice, Vidya worked in graphic design across Mumbai and Toronto, contributing to brand identity, digital media, and print–packaging projects. This background continues to inform her studio practice, bringing structural awareness, visual sensitivity, and conceptual clarity into her work.
A central part of Patel’s practice is still life painting, where everyday objects are approached as quiet carriers of memory, atmosphere, and emotional resonance. In her compositions—often featuring pears—form, light, and surface become tools for exploring subtle psychological states. Rather than depicting objects purely as representation, she treats them as symbolic presences that hold traces of domestic life, sensory memory, and contemplative stillness.
Alongside her still life practice, Patel develops more material-led works such as The 12th House Series, a body of small-scale paintings created through a process of material restraint. Using leftover acrylic paint from previous works, the series embraces limitation as a method, allowing instinctive strokes and layered textures to guide the emergence of figures and forms. These works exist between presence and dissolution, exploring themes of introspection, solitude, and inner landscapes.
Artist Statement
« My practice moves between still life painting, drawing, and material-based experimentation, exploring how everyday forms and intuitive mark-making can hold emotional and psychological presence. In my still life work, ordinary objects—particularly pears—become vessels for atmosphere, memory, and quiet symbolism. Through controlled lighting, surface texture, and restrained composition, I (explore how familiar domestic forms can evoke mood and inner states rather than simply represent objects. These paintings are less about arrangement and more about presence—how colour settles into form, how light moves across surfaces, and how stillness can carry emotional weight. Alongside this work, I develop smaller, intuitive paintings within The 12th House Series, where the process itself becomes the starting point. Using leftover acrylic paint from previous works introduces a form of material limitation that encourages instinctive decision-making and slower observation. Figures and gestures emerge through layered strokes, repetition, and partial erasure, existing between clarity and dissolution. Across both bodies of work, I approach painting as a space where atmosphere, memory, and sensation unfold gradually—inviting viewers into moments of quiet recognition and contemplative stillness. » (Vidya Patel)
