Patrick De Vries calls himself “Autistic artist”, a 38-year-old Dutch neurodivergent artist with an old soul. He has a high level of empathy, but life can feel lonely. From a young age, he always wanted to pursue a career in art. As a child, he drew comics, and at the age of 13 he also created very realistic nature drawings and female nude figures. His art teacher appreciated his work, but the attention it received from his (male) classmates led to it being destroyed.
At the age of 15, a painful turning point occurred and stability left the family household. His father died at the young age of 46 due to cancer. He also lost his mother emotionally because of depression, her autism, and the trauma from her past. If he may say so, she was a broken child, and he inherited part of her past while also acquiring new traumas of his own during childhood and adolescence. The years that followed were marked by instability, and it took a long time for him to find any sense of balance in life.
Depression became a prominent presence. Patrick tried to build a career working with animals, as he is a big animal lover. He kept rats as pets and worked in several zoos and an exotic bird shelter.
His creative side is broad. He loves acting, improvisation, imitation, and cabaret. He writes many poems, lyrics, poetry, and children’s stories. He draws and considers himself a comic artist, working traditionally on paper. As for his art and paintings, he describes himself as versatile in style, including comic art, psychedelic art, and illusion or interactive art.
Through his work, Patrick tries to raise awareness about mental health and share a positive view of life and the world, reaching out to those who need to hear themselves reflected in his words and art. He does this especially for women. He works from his heart and soul, allowing his inner child to be free, and through his art he tries to speak to the inner child of others as well.
