Kat Kleinman is a photographer and collage artist living near Sacramento, California. She has been working as a collage artist since 2016, after leaving her career as a psychotherapist working with homeless people. She mention this because it informs her artwork and the intention behind it, which is one of positivity and hope.
Her artistic journey began as a way to handle her grief after she left her job as a psychotherapist. She was determined to find a way to express her thoughts and emotions, so she began taking pictures of flowers, first locally and then by seeking them out in other communities. The sight of pretty pansies in front of an office building was enough to get her out of her car and taking pictures! The more she looked for flowers, the more she found. Looking for a method to display these photos, she decided to cut out the images of flowers individually, by hand. Next, these were applied to a paper mat board to display their beauty as fragments of color, connected as one whole form, new and complete. A floral collage from Kat Kleinman Art was born!
To get to this point, it has taken her several years of trying new ideas for collages. She has experimented with various color combinations, arrangements, and even incorporated a variety of subjects other than flowers. These include leaves, succulents, and even vegetables.
Her theory of how to create a floral collage was tested and proven successful when she began to attract attention on Instagram for her work. She is unaware of anyone who is creating collages with this exact technique. Most works are done with computer graphics, and her technique is literally hands-on. An important point is that she is the photographer of her subjects, unless a particular photo is donated by a personal friend. This is a major point in what differentiates her artworks from those of other artists.
Over time, she has come from being an unknown, untrained artist to one whose works are exhibited internationally. She loves creating collages, especially floral collages, and she is grateful for the opportunities available to her, which she could never have dreamed of only a few years ago!
The happiness her artwork brings her, and the delicious satisfaction of creating a beautiful collage, infused with love and inspiration, is unmatched. In discovering her technique to create stunning collages, she has found a way to express her hope for the world.
